Our Groote Eylandt Mining Company operation (GEMCO), located on an island in the Gulf of Carpentaria off the Australian coast, produces high-grade manganese ore. GEMCO is an open-cut mining operation, producing high-grade manganese ore that is shipped to our Tasmanian manganese alloy plant and around the world.

GEMCO commenced mining at Groote Eylandt in 1964, under BHP ownership. A crushing and wet screening plant was subsequently commissioned. The benefication plant was commissioned in 1972 at a 1.0 Mtpa capacity (100 per cent basis) and has since undergone a series of expansions. The most recent of these expansions was the GEMCO expansion project
The water supply for the mining town of Alyangula on Groote Eylandt comes from a pump station 18 kilometres away on a creek adjacent to the Angurugu indigenous community. Various facilities associated with BHP Billington's GEMCO manganese operations and the communities draw water along the way and the remainder terminates in large storage tanks above the township.
The airport is located in the north of Groote Eylandt near the community of Angurugu, about 20 minutes’ drive from the lodge. We transfer all guests to and from the airport. Groote Eylandt is a 1 Hour 30 minute flight from Darwin Airport.
